How to Install Optifine and BSL Shaders for Minecraft Java Edition

Shaders World

Unlock Your Minecraft Experience

Recently, I bought Minecraft Java Edition. I have been wanting shaders and a better look for a while now, so I thought I would bring some info along, as I have finally found out how to do it. This guide is for Windows 10, not Mac, so just a heads up. I hope this guide was helpful in advance. Enjoy!

Note that shaders are very taxing on the FPS and GPU. If you don’t have a great PC, then you will have to do some tweaking of the shaders settings to make it work well.

1: Installing Minecraft

If you don’t have Minecraft Java, you will not be able to use OptiFine or BSL shaders. To buy Minecraft ($35 AUD), go to Minecraft to buy it.

2: Download OptiFine

First, go to the OptiFine downloads page. You will then want the version of OptiFine that matches your version of Minecraft (latest release: 1.16.5). If you want to use snapshots, well, you won’t be be to use shaders or OptiFine until the release of 1.17 and the corresponding release of OptiFine. When this does happen, all you will have to do is delete the 1.16 version of OptiFine and replace it with the 1.17 version. When you click on the Download button, you will be led to a page called Adfoc.usTHIS PAGE IS A SCAM, AND IS TRYING TO HACK YOU. DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING EXCEPT THE ‘SKIP’ BUTTON IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER. If you don’t like my advice and want to click on the ad, well, you were warned. When you click ‘Skip’ you will be taken to a page with ‘Download’ in the center. Click this, and save it in your downloads folder. If your browser warns you that this file might be dangerous, click keep, unless it does not have the word ‘OptiFine’ in the file name. Save it to your Downloads folder.

3: Download Java

To install OptiFine, you will need a program called Java. Go to to download it. Save it in your Downloads folder, and then open the installer. Click Install, and then wait. When it says it is installed, click the Close button. Once this is done, you will need to install OptiFine.

4: Install OptiFine

Open up the OptiFine installer. Click Install, then wait, and then when it is done, click Close. Once you have done this, open the Minecraft launcher, and go to the Installations tab. Click ‘New’. Name it anything, but always remember, this is your OptiFine download. Then, click on the Version drop-down window. Click the installation that says ‘[minecraft version]-OptiFine_HD_U_G7’ or something like that. Click that, and then click ‘Create’. You can now play that version!

NOTE 1: None of your saves will be transferred to the OptiFine version. :/

NOTE 2: When you press C, you can zoom in! Pretty cool, right?

5: Install a Shader Pack

For this guide, the process is the same for any shader, but today we are using the BSL Shaders 1.14.4 pack. Open up the OptiFine game, then go to Resource Packs, and click ‘Open Pack Folder’ Go back from the pack folder to the .minecraft folder, and pin the .minecraft folder to your Quick Access. Go to the shader website, and find the right download. Click download, and then save it in the shaderpacks folder in the .minecraft folder. Once you have done this, go back to Minecraft. Exit, and re-enter it. Go to Options, then Video Settings, then Shaders. Click on the shader you want. Minecraft will reload, and then you can go in-game and play with a beautiful screen. Good luck!
